Introducing the AVONTUUR, a two-masted gaff-rigged

Introducing the AVONTUUR, a two-masted gaff-rigged schooner that was built in the Netherlands in 1920. Until 2005 it was sailing cargo between the North Sea, Baltic, North Atlantic, and across to Caribbean ports, where it was widely regarded as one of the last true cargo sailing ships of the twentieth century.

After years of serving as a day passenger ship, the AVONTUUR became the flagship of the @timbercoast community in the Autumn of 2014.

We are pleased to be shipping cargo with the Avontuur on Voyage 11. Where they will cross the Atlantic Ocean to collect coffee, panela, and cacao from Colombia and Mexico.

Sailing a roundtrip of over 12,000 nautical miles, using the strength of well-fed sailors and the Trade Winds for power to deliver these tropical wonders to us in Cornwall.

This summer we are operating cargo on regional del

This summer we are operating cargo on regional delivery routes with the handsome Grayhound Lugger of @grayhoundventures. Grayhound was commissioned by Marcus and Freya Pomeroy-Rowden and built in Cornwall. The ship was launched on the 4th of August 2012. It is a 5/6th scale replica of a three-masted UK Customs Lugger called Grayhound that was built in 1776.

One of the many trips planned will see the Grayhound move cargo from Penzance to Plymouth in June for a new port ally. Based in Cremyll on the Ramer peninsular in east Cornwall, Sail Trade South West is collecting orders for our sail-shipped products for local collection. They operate the Tamar sailing barge Lynher (@lynherofcremyll), which will move cargo from the Grayhound Lugger's arrival in Plymouth to locations along the river. Order via @sailtradeswlynher.

We have moved into our first ever real life, made

We have moved into our first ever real life, made for purpose, office. It’s amazing how much can be done working between voyages, in caravans, on boats, between homes, in a shared living room, on the kitchen table… balancing laptops on knees no more! So very exciting to have our first dedicated space.

We’ve been quiet of late, and not officially back in the office till next week, but I want to take a moment to wish you all a very happy new year!

Your support means the world to us and has steered us through a difficult 2022. I’m exhausted still, but cautiously optimistic for what’s to come.

We’ll be sharing our plans soon… there are new voyages, new partnerSHIPs and a BIG birthday on the horizon. 🪩⛵️🌅

Also onboard the @blueschoonercompany ship Gallant earlier this year, was our coffee! We are proud to be working with @yallahcoffee to deliver to you an exceptional bean, perfectly roasted.

The beans are supplied by @caravelacoffee from the Las Brisas region in Tolima, Colombia where 15 producers have contributed to this outstanding lot. With approximately 50% of the crop grown under shade, we know biodiversity is high and the need for fertilisation is low. We also know the price each farmer received was 27.5% higher than the market price.

The coffee was shipped from the port of Santa Marta and sailed over 4000 nautical miles to Cornwall, with a carbon footprint close to zero. Docking just a few miles down the road, we unloaded the sacks by hand and brought the coffee straight to the roastery.

Earlier this year the @blueschoonercompany ship Gallant delivered us a consignment of panela, which traveled over 4000 nautical miles from Colombia, pretty much emission-free. But what is panela?

Panela is raw, unrefined cane sugar that has been traditionally handmade for centuries by dehydrating raw sugarcane juice over low heat. Because it is made in such a simple way, it retails the flavourful and nutrient-rich molasses from sugarcane. The molasses in panela gives it its distinct flavour as well as some naturally occurring vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

We've been impressed with all the wonderful ways our panela has been transformed, from cakes to cocktails and @farrobakery 's panela and bourbon custard tart, and panela and vanila soft serve... mmmm mmmm.

Last weekend we hosted sail cargo practitioners and enthusiasts old and new, from near and far, in an old house in deepest darkest Cornwall - for the first @sailcargoalliance meeting since 2019.

The planets aligned for a beautiful time together. We left feeling exceptionally well nourished, and not just by the incredible food and magic location. This weekend has bolstered our resolve to do what we do, to feel supported in it, and to see that we are not alone. This seems like a rare thing in today’s world, but it is just deeply human - we need our communities, and to connect IRL. So thank you to all who participated and were able to show up for each other.

This weekend we are gathering the @sailcargoalliance in Cornwall. It has been 3 years since our last meeting so we're very excited to host a room full of real-life sail cargo people.

We still have a handful of tickets available for the Saturday night Supper where we have teamed up with @lolas_cornwall to showcase what delicious wonders can be made by combining produce sourced locally and from across the oceans, shipped by sail.

We invite you to join us in the main hall at Prussia Cove, once home to the 18th-century shipwrecker and smuggler John Carter, the “King of Prussia”. Already attending the supper are sailors, ship owners and sail cargo activists from near and far, ready to share tales from their adventures on the high seas.
