Whilst the @passeite_azeite olives are curing, the winter frosts mean there are fewer outdoor jobs on the farm. Of course there is never complete 'down-time' for farmers, so Marije, Gui and the family are busy maintaining the machines, tidying up after the harvest and doing admin work; making labels, brochures, organising packaging, stock counts and “the bureaucratic stuff that's no fun”!
Here are some photos Marije sent us of winter life on the farm, an interesting contrast from the golden Portuguese summer sunshine we usually see! (Although the dog in the second photo seems to have found a sun trap to bask in!)

We offer both very finely ground beans for espresso/stovetop machines & coarse ground for a cafetière.

HNY everyone! Here’s one of our favourite photo from last year, taken in May when we unloaded our first coffee and cocoa beans sailed across the Atlantic on board the @blueschoonercompany ship Gallant.

The crew sailed straight home from Mexico - skipping the Azores in case they got caught up in the local lockdowns. They spent 55 days at sea, which is quite an extreme isolation in itself! Luckily, as you can see they all rolled in smiling. As someone wise once said “It’s not the journey or the destination, it’s the company”.

2020 has been a wild ride and we expect nothing less of 2021. Grateful to be facing the challenges ahead with you, our supporters and our collaborators, our allies and friends, those close to home and far away. Grateful for this work that connects us all.

One of the most addictive aspects about running this station is finding out about the incredible things happening right under our noses.

At the end of the summer we went on board The Gallant, a cargo sail boat run by New Dawn Traders - an experimental business who import produce from across the Atlantic Ocean and along European coastlines pollution-free. Inspired by people, projects and businesses that promote resilience in local food systems, they have designed the Voyage COOP to apply this way of thinking to international trade. With their network of ships, producers and allies, they are at the forefront of building new models for supply chains that puts the planet and people first

We watched The Gallant sail in to the harbour from our studio and we then went on board to talk to the crew and their port allies, Kent Sail Cargo. Not only did we have the time of our lives, we also fell in love with the project and the people who make it happen.

This year De Gallant has sailed 19,700 nautical miles. She can carry up to 35 tonnes of cargo at a time. At full capacity we can save at least 10,000kg of CO2 per year, compared with shipping the same cargo by container ship.⠀

These figures are staggering when you consider that an average freighter can carry 3,000 containers with a capacity of about 25 tonnes each.

Gallant is currently on her way south across the Atlantic to collect coffee, panela & tea. ⠀

Each year our networks go from strength to strength. The ships we work with are not sailing to compete with Maersk. Our ships demand our patience, loyalty and love. They ask us to be human and not ‘consumer’. Our journey is a symbolic one to re-enchant a culture around the stuff we make, trade and consume.⠀

This week 1900 containers were lost to the Pacific. With 40 likely holding hazardous goods.

Yesterday the news broke that container ship The ‘ONE’ Apus, suffered a container collapse mid-Pacific during a voyage from Yantian, China bound for Long Beach, California.
-
The ship was approximately 1,600 nautical miles northwest of Hawaii when it encountered a violent storm. The vessel rolled heavily and 1900 containers were lost to the ocean.
Container ships often carry toxic chemicals, pesticides & waste and it has been reported that 40 of the containers lost from The Apus were carrying hazardous goods.

Not only does this disaster put marine life under threat, it also endangered the crew and the semi submerged containers pose a danger to other ships.

This is not an isolated incident, every year an average of 10,000 containers are lost to the ocean. (Freightened Documentary, 2016)
Infact this incident is the second recent container collapse experienced aboard one of the vessels of the network.
On October 30, a sister ship, the ONE Aquila also suffered a collapse during heavy weather in the Pacific. The company did not announce the number of containers lost or damaged.
